Legacy Youth Development (LYD) or Legacy for short, is an after-school mentoring program aimed to provide opportunities for youth (grades 2-6) needing an extra level of support to become hope-filled, resilient and healthy adolescents. LYD participants are referrals from local schools, churches and other professionals. Pre-registration is required.
LYD participants work with animals and nature to help build life skills, human connectivity, communication and social skills to build self-efficacy, responsibility, empathy, compassion, personal boundaries, leadership and teamwork skills through faith-based mentorship, and hands-on learning activities.
Some of these session group activities include working with and or riding horses, crafts, games, light farm chores, nature walks, woodworking and life skills. Each session is designed to be a relationally-based time rather than simply “horse lessons.” While we do teach beginner horsemanship and riding is often included in session times, participants do not necessarily ride each time they attend a session.
We are not a professional counseling agency or offer therapy. We believe that counseling/therapy is an important aspect of healing and encourage professional counseling, if needed or desired.
It is our joy to be a non-profit organization and offer our services low/no charge to individuals/families in need. By God's grace we get to shoulder with our generous donors to bring hope and a smile to each child's/adult’s face. If, as a participant, you are able/willing to donate for your session, donations are gladly accepted to help cover costs.
Our main requirement is that the participant wants to come. While we do not wish to turn any child away, there are a limited number of spaces available. Although we cannot guarantee a session for every child who wants/needs one, MLF does its best to accommodate as many participants as possible.
We also understand that every child has his or her own unique challenges and our session leaders work hard to adapt sessions to meet the needs of each individual.
All participants (minors and adults) must complete a Participant Application and Liability Waiver prior to attending a session.
It is our goal to have LYD participants meet once per week during the school year and if possible throughout the summer. Once the Legacy Youth Development Application has been completed, an email will be sent to the parent(s)/guardian with additional program details.
All guests, participants and volunteers are required to sign a liability and photo release waiver in order to participate in our programs, as required by our insurance. Waivers will be provided at the time of applying for our program. Waivers are kept on file for one calendar year.
